KAHIBAH'S Tony McCabe sprung a surprise when he knocked international Sam Laguzza (Toronto Workers) out of the Darby Ross Singles yesterday.

McCabe defeated the previously unbeaten Laguzza 21-14 in their final sectional match at Kahibah yesterday after Laguzza had won his first two games by a total of 25 shots.

The result meant that both players finished with two wins and a margin of plus 18 shots and under the tournament rules McCabe progressed at the expense of Laguzza.

McCabe will play in the post-sectional round tomorrow and will come up against Chris Evans (Charlestown), Andrew Gardiner (Cabramatta) and Aaron Appleby (Kurri Kurri).

Four previous winners remain in contention for the title, including McCabe's uncle, former international Terry McCabe (Windale-Gateshead).

Terry McCabe, the 1988 Australian singles champion, will be opposed to another previous winner, Clay Parker from Maitland City.

Also in that section are Ian Papworth (Kahibah) and Barry Conna (New Lambton).

Ian Lean (Raymond Terrace) and Wayne Lambourne (Maitland City) are the other previous winners through to the final 16.

Raymond Terrace's Chris Ramage and Doug Howard from Hamilton are the two wildcards to advance. Ramage was the best-performed player not to win his section on Monday, while Howard was the best performed runner-up from the seven sections yesterday.

The four section winners from tomorrow's action return for the final round of sectional play on Friday.
