COUNT on Sam Mackinnon playing with titleholders Melbourne in 2008-09.

The 2006-07 NBL MVP and former Victorian junior star has been linked with a few clubs since severing ties with Brisbane but is keen to return to his home state.

Mackinnon is undergoing treatment for a blood condition - he had clots in his lungs which hospitalised him in April - and is unavailable for national selection for the Beijing Olympics.

The Tigers have the inside running to secure Mackinnon's services.

His signing would end their talks with classy United States import Dave Thomas.
